One of the most common classes of drugs I see in my patient population is proton pump inhibitors (PPI). Examples are Aciphex, Prevacid, Nexium, Prilosec and Protonix. Patients take these drugs to reduce the production of stomach acid. Short term use is without much risk, but once patients go on these drugs they have a difficult time stopping. Long-term use is rich in adverse reactions.
