It is beneficial for women to keep track of their hormone levels in order to maintain proper breast health for life.

There are several different ways to evaluate breast health. We can use blood, saliva or urine testing; measuring estrogen levels. I mostly use blood hormone testing because it has fewer variables, more published data, and is more likely to be covered under insurance.

Estrogen interacts with other hormones, so levels do change from day to day and minute to minute. Free estradiol is the primary active estrogen, but there are active metabolites that cannot be ignored. Levels fluctuate depending on time of the month, during menopause transition and as a result of many other factors. 2-OH and 16-OH the active metabolites of estrogen are available. When estrogen is evaluated it must also include progesterone levels.

Women usually do not need more estrogen. In fact, they probably need help with hormone metabolism.

It is common for a patient to have a multitude of symptoms that the clinician is often at a loss of how to precede in assisting the patient on the path to wellness. The patient can present numerous complaints including, but not limited to, digestive, dermatological, neurological, fatigue and muscular-skeletal. In my clinical practice, I move forward with a safe, gentle and supervised detoxification program.

If you are like most people, then this year’s allergy symptoms have been notably worse than prior years. Sneezing, post-nasal drip, red and teary eyes are just a few of the annoying symptoms.

dr scott banks functional medicine solutionsMethylation is a process that occurs in the body millions of time per day. In this process, a single carbon plus three hydrogens known as a methyl group is applied to facilitate many crucial functions in the body.

Methylation is critical in repairing DNA, removal of environmental and metabolic toxins plus boosting your immune system just to name a few.

Methylation defects are associated with estrogen related cancers (breast, ovarian, prostate etc.), stroke, cardiovascular events, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, autism and many autoimmune disorders. Defects in methylation reduce your ability to detoxify.

In patients’ search to get well they have often gone the traditional route with little results and a prescription for an acid blocker. This is not going to fix the problem and often will contribute to the patient’s downward spiral over time. Conventional testing looking at IgE food allergies fails to pick up foods that the patient has a delayed sensitivity to. IgG testing looks at these delayed sensitivities and can often be discovered and then removed from the diet with a positive outcome in the patient’s health.

As a certified gluten practitioner I have the ability to offer my patients a more sensitive and sophisticated type test. Cyrex labs is a premier functional assessment lab that offers testing that I can not get from any other lab.

As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner I see people with a wide range of symptoms.

If you polled 50 Functional Medicine Doctors, all would agree the place to start with a complex patient is in the gut.

Research is now showing that there is a relationship between SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and FM (fibromyalgia).

SIBO refers to a condition in which an abnormally large number of bacteria are present in the small intestine. Additionally, the types of bacteria in the small intestines resemble the bacteria of the colon rather than the small intestine.

Simply put, small intestine bacterial overgrowth is a chronic bacterial infection of the small intestine.  The infection is of a bacterium that normally lives in the gastrointestinal tract, but has abnormally overgrown in the location not meant for many other bacteria.

I have added the BEMER Vascular Therapy to my array of specialized processes to accelerate patients’ wellbeing and continued optimal health.

Effective blood circulation is a prerequisite for a healthy mind/body condition. It is necessary for healing and regeneration of the body. Blood is the vehicle for the supply of nutrients and oxygen as well as for the removal of metabolic end products and toxins.

I just returned from the Institute for Functional Medicine Symposium in San Francisco. This year’s theme was Functional Perspectives on Food and Nutrition: The Ultimate in Upstream Medicine.

Over the next several weeks I will post several blogs relating to the information that I acquired.

The choices you make at meal time can trigger your immune system to induce systemic inflammation. Twenty years ago when we talked about “leaky gut” at a conventional medical seminar it was considered an artifact. However, if you do a published medical search on it today, many high profile publications will appear.

An abundance of unhealthy fats and sugar can set the stage for inflammation by prompting an immune response. It is now evident that obesity and Type II Diabetes are associated with a low grade inflammatory tone.
