As a Certified Functional Medicine Practitioner I see people with a wide range of symptoms.

If you polled 50 Functional Medicine Doctors, all would agree the place to start with a complex patient is in the gut.

Research is now showing that there is a relationship between SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) and FM (fibromyalgia).

SIBO refers to a condition in which an abnormally large number of bacteria are present in the small intestine. Additionally, the types of bacteria in the small intestines resemble the bacteria of the colon rather than the small intestine.

Simply put, small intestine bacterial overgrowth is a chronic bacterial infection of the small intestine.  The infection is of a bacterium that normally lives in the gastrointestinal tract, but has abnormally overgrown in the location not meant for many other bacteria.

I have added the BEMER Vascular Therapy to my array of specialized processes to accelerate patients’ wellbeing and continued optimal health.

Effective blood circulation is a prerequisite for a healthy mind/body condition. It is necessary for healing and regeneration of the body. Blood is the vehicle for the supply of nutrients and oxygen as well as for the removal of metabolic end products and toxins.

I just returned from the Institute for Functional Medicine Symposium in San Francisco. This year’s theme was Functional Perspectives on Food and Nutrition: The Ultimate in Upstream Medicine.

Over the next several weeks I will post several blogs relating to the information that I acquired.

The choices you make at meal time can trigger your immune system to induce systemic inflammation. Twenty years ago when we talked about “leaky gut” at a conventional medical seminar it was considered an artifact. However, if you do a published medical search on it today, many high profile publications will appear.

An abundance of unhealthy fats and sugar can set the stage for inflammation by prompting an immune response. It is now evident that obesity and Type II Diabetes are associated with a low grade inflammatory tone.

I just listened to my monthly subscription for Functional Medicine Update. My good friend, Dr. Jeffrey Bland interviewed Dr. Antonio Gasbarrini a gastroenterologist from University of Rome. The conversations are all very informative and Dr. Bland has been performing this great service for the past 32 years. Hard to believe, but true and I have learned a great deal from these audio presentations over my last 20 years of implementing Functional Medicine. This month's conversation was ‘pace setting’ and ‘paradigm shifting.’ The topic was "leaky gut" also known as "metabolic endotoxemia.” We focused on the mucosal barrier function as it relates to irritable bowel disease, Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity and liver disease.

We now know that the gut is very important and the interplay of the diet with alterations of the food supply can have profound implications in overall long term health relationships.

We also know that the diet that interacts with our microbiome affects our systemic health.

Heart disease has been called the Silent Killer because it often has no noticeable symptoms. It's more deadly than all forms of cancer combined and it’s not just "an old man’s disease."

Since the first National Wear Red Day in 2003, we've made tremendous strides in the fight against heart disease in women. Through research and education on healthy lifestyle changes, we’re proud that:

LOCAL CLINICIAN RECOGNIZED AS a graduate of The Institute for Functional Medicine’s Certification Program

Dr. Scott J. Banks, DC, IFMCP, PC Joins Elite Group of IFM Certified Practitioners

Federal Way, WA; February 3, 2014 – Of total healthcare costs in the United States, more than 75% is due to chronic conditions.

The key to reversing the rapidly spreading epidemic of chronic disease is to address the underlying causes and solutions for chronic disease, which are primarily driven by the lifelong, daily interaction among an individual’s genetics, environment, and lifestyle choices. Functional medicine not only incorporates the latest in genetic science and systems biology, but it also enables health care practitioners to practice proactive, predictive, personalized medicine while empowering patients to take an active role in their own health.

The Institute for Functional Medicine (IFM), the global leader in providing clinical education in functional medicine, is pleased to announce Dr. Scott J. Banks as a member of the first graduating class of certified functional medicine practitioners.

dr scott banks functional medicineEverywhere we go we hear the term "GMOs." Here is a brief explanation:

GMOs are organisms that have been created through the gene-splicing techniques of the biotech industry. GMOs are also know as genetically engineered, or GE. This new science became available in the mid-nineties. This science allows DNA from one species to be injected into another species in a laboratory, creating combinations of plant, animal, bacterial and viral genes that do not occur in nature.

In the US,  the FDA approved commercial production of GMO's based on studies conducted by the companies that created them and profit from their sale. I call this tobacco-science. Many enlightened people find the lack of rigorous,...
